Doc continues to hone craft during spring

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Roy Halladay always seemed like a perfectionist from afar, but his perfectionism is even more apparent up close.

Halladay allowed three hits, one run and two walks and struck out six in five innings Monday in a 5-1 Phillies victory over the Pirates in a Grapefruit League game at McKechnie Field. He has a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings this spring, having allowed six hits, one run and two walks while striking out 14.

"I'm still battling a few little things that kind of come and go," Halladay said. "Just consistency, sinker, throwing quality strikes as often as I would like. Just a couple bad walks today. The ball is kind of running away from me. Just getting more consistent with that, especially getting ahead early in the count and being able to stay ahead.

"But physically, I feel good. It's just that consistency. Getting it there every time, but physically is always important right now."

Right-hander David Herndon, a Rule 5 Draft pick who is competing for a job in the bullpen, threw two scoreless innings Monday. He allowed just one hit, recording five groundouts.

In four appearances this spring, Herndon has thrown five scoreless innings.
