Victorino, Phillies agree to three-year deal

PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. sounded pretty optimistic Wednesday that the Phillies would sign Joe Blanton, Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz to multiyear contract extensions in the near future.

Two down.

One to go.

The Phillies and Victorino agreed on Thursday on a three-year contract extension worth $22 million, which will keep him under contract with Philadelphia through 2012. The extension, formally announced on Friday, buys out Victorino's final two years of salary arbitration and his first year of free agency.

The agreement with Victorino follows the announcement the Phillies had signed Blanton to a three-year, $24 million extension. Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said Thursday the Phillies also could lock up Ruiz to a new contract before the end of next week.

Victorino hit .292 with 39 doubles, 13 triples, 10 home runs, 62 RBIs and 25 stolen bases last season. He made his first National League All-Star team and earned his second consecutive Gold Glove.

Victorino had sought $5.8 million in arbitration. The Phillies had offered $4.75 million.
