Perkins, Giles win April honors as Phillies Minor League Players of the month

Outfielder Cameron Perkins of the Reading Fightin Phils is the Phillies Minor League Player of the Month for April. Pitching honors go to Reading teammate, right-hander Ken Giles. Both players were honored as Phillies Minor League Player of the Week, April 3-13.

Perkins, 23, batted .382 with two homeruns, 14 RBI and a 1.023 OPS for the month. A native of Nederland, Texas, Perkins was selected by the Phillies in the sixth round of the June 2012 draft out of Purdue University.

The 6-foot-5 outfielder ended the month with a hit in 19 of the 23 games played in April, while tallying multiple hits in 13 of those 19 contests. Perkins' April slugging percentage (.596) was good for eighth place in all of double-A.

A veteran of three seasons, Perkins has combined to hit .307 (238-775) in 201 career minor league games.

Giles, selected in the seventh round of the June 2011 draft, collected seven saves in eight opportunities with a 1.38 ERA over 11 games played in the month of April. The New Mexico native struck out 25 batters while walking only four in 13.0 innings of work for a 6.25 strikeout-to-walk-ratio during this month.

The 6-foot-2 right-hander has allowed only eight hits in 46 at-bats, holding opponents to a .174 average while averaging 17.31 strikeouts per nine innings pitched this season.

Giles, also 23, was a non-roster invitee to Major League Spring Training this past spring.
