Pinch-hitter Tony Gwynn Jr. hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop that bounced off the D-backs' Cliff Pennington and into shallow center field for an error, allowing two runs to score. Asche, who had walked and driven in a run, slid headfirst into second to avoid the tag from Aaron Hill.
"I'm going to go out there and put it in the umpire's hands, and he was willing to check it out right away," Sandberg said when asked why he challenged the call.
The play made the score 4-3 in favor of the D-backs with the Phillies scoring three runs in the inning.
