Madson excels in latest save situation

MILWAUKEE -- The way Phillies right-hander Ryan Madson pitched Sunday at Miller Park, he would be expected to close the next time the Phillies have a save situation.

Madson picked up an impressive four-out save in a 6-5 victory over the Brewers.

Madson is 5-5 with a 3.27 ERA and nine saves in 77 appearances this season, although he is 1-3 with a 6.60 ERA, and six blown saves in 15 save opportunities. But Brad Lidge is 0-8 with a 7.51 ERA and has blown a Major League-leading 11 saves. Lidge pitched in the seventh inning in Friday's 8-4 loss to the Brewers as he tried to work on his fastball.

"He pitched good today," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "I like that. He's starting to get the job done.

"Like I told you guys before, let me tell you something: Lidge will get back to where he was. I'm a firm believer in that. I don't want to shoot Lidge. I think he'll be back to where he was at, really. Seriously. But I think right now, just from a mental aspect and everything -- physical and mental -- he needs a little break."
