Mayaguez 4, Caguas 3 (11 innings)
Dee Gordon's 11th-inning triple plated Daniel Ortiz and was the difference Friday, as Mayaguez downed Caguas in the first game of the round-robin playoffs. Gordon, the Dodgers shortstop who has spent time playing both second base and center field in winter ball, also led off the game with a triple and went 4-for-5. Ortiz had three hits, while Miguel Abreu and Aaron Bates had two hits apiece for Caguas. Box score

Ponce 6, Carolina 2
Ponce got off to a fast start as the four-team round-robin playoffs began in Puerto Rico on Friday. With three runs in the first and two in the second, Ponce cruised to a 6-2 victory, led by Padres outfield prospect Reymond Fuentes, who went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Jonathan Mota and Henry Ramos also had two hits, and Giancarlo Alvarado allowed just one run on three hits in six innings to pick up the win. Box score

Dominican Winter League

Escogido 4, Licey 3
Pittsburgh's Starling Marte hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Escogido topped Licey to move into first place in the Dominican Winter League's round-robin playoffs. Escogido mustered just five hits on the night, and Marte knocked in all four of the club's runs. Edward Valdez, who went 5 1/3 innings, allowed two first-inning runs on a Juan Francisco homer, but nothing more. With the win, Escogido is now 4-2 in the playoffs -- a game ahead of Licey and Aguilas. Box score

Aguilas 3, Gigantes 2
Aguilas rallied for two runs in the eighth inning and held off Gigantes to move into a tie for second in the round-robin playoffs. Ricardo Nanita hit an RBI single to tie the game and came around to score the eventual winning run on a Zoilo Almonte single two batters later. Leury Garcia of the White Sox had two hits for Gigantes in defeat. Box score

Venezuelan Winter League

Zulia 2, Magallanes 0
Four Zulia pitchers, led by starter Wilfredo Boscan, combined to shut out Magallanes on Friday night. Boscan allowed four hits in five innings, and Yeiper Castillo followed with 2 2/3 frames of scoreless relief. Offensively, J.C. Linares went 3-for-3 and Jose Pirela added two hits, while Ezequiel Carrera had three knocks in defeat for Magallanes. Box score

Caribes 7, La Guaira 6

La Guaira scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead, but Caribes answered right back with two of its own in the bottom of the frame. Jose Castillo led Caribes with three hits, including a second-inning homer. Alexi Amarista of the Padres, Eduardo Escobar and Gustavo Molina each added two hits, and Pedro Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to nail down the save. Box score
