Phillies sign Nieves

The Phillies have signed catcher Wil Nieves to a one-year contract, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.

Nieves, 36, appeared in 71 games (40 starts) last season for the Arizona Diamondbacks and batted .297 with one home run and 22 RBI. He hit .302 (15-53) with runners in scoring position. Over the last two years, he has batted a combined .299 in 103 games.

A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Nieves is a career .242 hitter with eight home runs and 103 RBI in 385 games with the San Diego Padres (2002), New York Yankees (2005-07), Washington Nationals (2008-10), Milwaukee Brewers (2011), Colorado Rockies (2012) and Diamondbacks (2012-13). He was originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Padres in 1996.

Nieves will wear #21.

Additionally, the Phillies have signed right-hander Jeff Manship to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training. A 2007 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Manship appeared in 11 games (four starts) last season for the Colorado Rockies and went 0-5 with a 7.04 ERA. In his major league career, the 28-year-old has a 3-7 record with a 6.42 ERA in 52 combined games (10 starts) for the Minnesota Twins (2009-12) and Rockies (2013).
