"The ball had really good backspin on it," Revere said that night. "It was up there, about to go over my head. In the back of mind I was saying, 'Just jump for it. Just go for it.' Luckily, I reached out long enough to snag it into my glove and pull that bad boy in and get the double play. It was real big. I'd like to get that Gold Glove, so I'm going to bust my tail for that."
Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2013 GIBBY trophies based on votes by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American Baseball Research.
This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 22 categories. Individual honors go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.
GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic, regular-season moment and postseason moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels.
In the past five years, fans have cast more than 50 million votes across the various GIBBY categories, none of which was restricted to individual League affiliation. Fan voting runs through Dec. 1.
Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla.
Revere isn't the only Phillies player or moment from 2013 to be nominated. Cliff Lee is a finalist for top starting pitcher, and Domonic Brown is a candidate for breakout hitter. Lee went 14-8 with a 2.87 ERA, 222 strikeouts and just 32 walks in 222 2/3 innings. Brown hit .272 with 27 homers and 83 RBIs in 540 plate appearances.
Meanwhile, the Phanatic's four-wheeler dying on the field is in the oddity category, John Mayberry's game-winning grand slam June 4 puts him in the walk-off category and Chase Utley's triple into the Wrigley Field ivy that dislodged another ball makes him a finalist in the Cut4 topic.
