Phillies trade Michael Young

|

The Phillies traded infielder Michael Young and cash considerations to the Los Angeles Dodgers for left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.

In 28 games this season (24 starts) between double-A Chattanooga and triple-A Albuquerque, Rasmussen has gone 3-11 with a 4.11 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 135.2 innings. The 24-year-old was selected by the Dodgers in the 2nd round of the June 2010 draft out of UCLA.

Young batted .276 with 24 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 42 RBI in 126 games with Philadelphia this season, including seven hits in his last 10 at-bats prior to being traded. He has made 118 starts in the field this year: 101 at third base and 17 at first base.

Over the last 12 seasons (2002-13), Young ranks second among all MLB players in hits (2,359), games (1,949) and at-bats (7,867), trailing only the Yankees' Ichiro Suzuki in all three categories. He is a career .300 hitter with a .346 on-base percentage, 439 doubles, 59 triples, 185 home runs and 1,026 RBI.

The 36-year-old Young was originally acquired by the Phillies on December 9, 2012, from the Texas Rangers in exchange for right-handed pitchers Josh Lindblom and Lisalverto Bonilla.

Young was born in Covina, Ca., about 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
