WASHINGTON -- Shortly after Luis Encarnacion turned 16 at midnight on Thursday, the Phillies signed the Dominican prospect to a contract worth $1 million, according to Baseball America.

Encarnacion, the No. 12 international prospect according to MLB.com, projects at third base and has a powerful right-handed swing. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect was a standout at the MLB International Showcase in January, where he recorded four hits in seven at-bats.

The signing of Encarnacion adds more depth to an already competitive position in the Phillies' organization. Three of their top 20 prospects are also third basemen, including Maikel Franco (No. 2) and Mitch Walding (No. 17). Cody Asche, the team's No. 7 prospect, made his Major League debut with the Phillies on July 30.

The Phillies have also had talks with Cuban pitching prospect Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. Gonzalez reportedly had agreed to a six-year, $48 million contract on July 26, but a source told MLB.com on Tuesday that the two parties have since hit a snag. There is now a chance that the deal will fall through.
