Phillies put Condrey on 15-day DL

Phillies put Condrey on 15-day DL

|
ST. PETERSBURG -- Clay Condrey is just the latest in a trend.

He is another injured Phillies player on the 15-day disabled list.

He joins Brett Myers, Brad Lidge, Raul Ibanez and Scott Eyre. The Phillies placed Condrey on the DL on Tuesday because of a strained left oblique and recalled left-hander Sergio Escalona from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his place on the 25-man roster.

Condrey, who underwent an MRI exam Sunday, has had some lower back issues, but he said he tried to pitch through them and the injury spread to his oblique.

"I don't like it," Condrey said of the DL. "I definitely didn't want to join them."

Condrey, who is 4-2 with a 3.71 ERA, was 4-1 with a 2.14 ERA in his first 31 appearances this season. He is 0-1 with a 162.00 ERA (six earned runs in one-third inning) in his past two appearances. He said the oblique only started to really bother him during his last appearance Thursday against the Blue Jays.

He is hopeful he can rejoin the team July 4, the earliest he can be activated.

"It's tricky, but there's no date really set," Condrey said. "I do know that it's mild."

The Phillies had just three relief pitchers on the DL all last season: Lidge, Tom Gordon and Rudy Seanez. This season has been quite different.

"How healthy we were played a big role in what happened," manager Charlie Manuel said, referring to the team's World Series championship.

Lidge threw a scoreless inning Tuesday for Class A Clearwater. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said afterward that Lidge "threw pretty well. We're pretty pleased, and I think he was pretty pleased with his outing. He was pretty effective."

Amaro said he and the Phillies' coaching staff would discuss Wednesday if Lidge needed to make another rehab appearance.
