Howard checked into an area hospital after Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Orioles when his virus spiked.
Despite a 103.9-degree fever on Saturday morning and a brief hospital visit, Howard still arrived at the ballpark and crushed a dramatic three-run, pinch-hit homer off Orioles reliever Danys Baez in the seventh to temporarily propel the Phillies ahead, 5-3. It was the fifth pinch-hit homer of Howard's career and extended his Major League-leading games played streak to 343, dating back to May 25, 2007.
For the second consecutive game, Greg Dobbs was penciled in to start at first base in place of Howard, the 2006 National League Most Valuable Player.
The last time Howard did not start at first base was June 26, 2008, against the Rangers.
