PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies shook a trend of taking Day 3 high schoolers when they selected Georgia Tech infielder Samuel Dove with the 421st overall pick in the 14th round of the First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.
Unlike many of the high-school prospects who were selected this weekend, Dove did not have many choices on the diamond when he was younger and had to walk on at Georgia Tech. Dove eventually earned a starting role and was in the lineup for 61 of the Yellow Jackets' 64 games in the 2013 season.
Dove hit .288 with 34 RBIs and a .371 on-base percentage, while primarily playing second base last season. In his time at Georgia Tech, the 22-year-old also played left field and third base.
