Making first visit, Phillies like Citi Field

NEW YORK -- Shea Stadium is a parking lot, and that seems to be just fine with the Phillies.

Not that they minded Shea. They just think Citi Field is a little nicer.

"The fans are a little more on you, so we'll see how we can handle it," Phils center fielder Shane Victorino said before Wednesday's game against the Mets. "It's definitely a prettier park, but I loved playing at Shea. There was something about that park. I know the facilities weren't the greatest, but I just loved playing there. But this is brand new and state of the art."

Players considered Shea neutral to hitters and pitchers, while Citi Field seems to be more pitcher-friendly with a vast outfield.

Citi Field also has plenty of nooks and crannies, especially in right field, where the outfield wall juts in and out.

"There's a lot of different angles out there," Victorino said. "During [batting practice], I'll go in the outfield and work on those angles. It's going to be a little different for right fielders."

Shea could be an intimidating place to play. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel thinks Citi Field could be intimidating in time.

"It builds its own way," Manuel said.
