Lannan to be examined for knee soreness

|

CINCINNATI -- Phillies left-hander John Lannan opened his season with consecutive quality starts before the Reds roughed him up for six runs in 1 2/3 innings Wednesday at Great American Ball Park.

Lannan revealed afterward he felt soreness above his left knee, which prevented him from pushing off the rubber. That made it difficult to keep the ball down in the strike zone, which could explain why he allowed the six runs on eight hits, one walk and one home run.

Phillies physician Michael Ciccotti will examine Lannan on Thursday in Philadelphia.

"It happened when I bunted against the Marlins," said Lannan, referring to his previous start Friday in Miami. "I've had it before. I did everything in between starts to prepare for today. It was feeling really good. I felt nothing warming up, then the third pitch to the first batter something tweaked, I guess, and from then on I really had no push off from my back side."

Lannan, who referred to the issue as tendinitis, is uncertain if he might miss a start.

"I don't know at this point," he said. "I hope not."
