Phillies announce 2013 player development staff

The Phillies have finalized their player development staff for the 2013 season, Joe Jordan, director, player development, announced today.

At triple-A Lehigh Valley, Dave Brundage takes over as manager.  Brundage had spent the last six years as manager for the Atlanta Braves’ triple-A affiliate and, prior to that, was part of the Seattle Mariners’ player development staff for 19 seasons.  Sal Rende returns for his third consecutive year as Lehigh Valley’s coach (and seventh, overall, as the Phillies’ triple-A coach), while former major league pitcher Ray Burris has been named the team’s new pitching coach.  Burris pitched for seven different teams over his 15-year (1973-87) major league career.  He had been a pitching coach in the Detroit Tigers’ minor league system the previous seven years.

Dusty Wathan will be back at the helm for double-A Reading.  Wathan joined Reading in 2012 and led the team to the Eastern League playoffs and, following the season, served as a manager in the Arizona Fall League.  Frank Cacciatore returns for his sixth season as a coach for Reading while new pitching coach Dave Lundquist gets promoted from single-A Clearwater.

In Clearwater, Chris Truby will be back for his second season as the team’s manager and John Mizerock for his third season as coach.  Bob Milacki has been tabbed as Clearwater’s new pitching coach after spending the previous three years with Reading.

Single-A Lakewood’s staff will once again feature Mickey Morandini and Greg Legg as manager and coach, respectively.  Aaron Fultz moves up to Lakewood as pitching coach after spending his first season with the organization in single-A Williamsport.

The Phillies have yet to fill the role of manager at Williamsport, but have rounded out the coaching staff with Lino Connell as coach and Les Lancaster as pitching coach.

For the rookie-level Gulf Coast Phillies, longtime organization staff member Roly deArmas returns as the team’s manager, joined by coach Rafael DeLima and pitching coach Steve Schrenk.  In addition, former Phillies major league coach Ramon Henderson has returned to the organization as a coach for the GCL Phillies.  Henderson had previously spent 27 years with the Phillies as a minor league player, coach and manager and the major league bullpen coach (1998-2008).

The coordinator staff is as follows: Mike Compton (field), Gorman Heimueller (pitching), first-year member Andy Tracy (hitting), Doug Mansolino (infield), Andy Abad (outfield/baserunning) and Ernie Whitt (catching).  Tracy spent last season as manager of Williamsport.  Carlos Arroyo has been named the organization’s minor league roving pitching coach and Jorge Velandia has assumed the position of special assistant, player development.
