ST. LOUIS -- The Phillies hit St. Louis with a three-boom salute on Friday night at Busch Stadium. For just the seventh time in club history, Philadelphia socked three consecutive homers.
It marked the first time the Phillies accomplished the feat since May 18, 2004, when Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell and Jim Thome hit consecutive homers against the Dodgers.
Friday's first-inning fireworks began with two outs and nobody on. Chase Utley started the long ball show with a drive into the right-field bullpen off Todd Wellemeyer for his Major League-leading 22nd homer.
Ryan Howard, returning to his hometown, showed his strength to the opposite field with a 346-foot homer that dropped into the seats near the left-field foul pole. Then Burrell made it three straight with a shot into the left-field stands.
It was No. 16 for Howard and No. 17 for Burrell.
