Gordon proud of son's Draft position

ATLANTA -- Tom Gordon was a sixth-round Draft choice by Kansas City in 1986. More than two decade later, his son, Devaris Strange-Gordon, was taken in the fourth round, No. 127 overall, by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

Not bad for someone who had no interest in baseball for the longest time, despite the constant urgings of his father.

"He never cared for baseball; he didn't play at all," the Phillies right-handed reliever said on Friday. "I kept trying to get him interested, but all he cared about was basketball. Now he loves baseball."

Strange-Gordon played just one season of college baseball, but the Dodgers were obviously sold on the 19-year-old's potential to take him in the fourth round.

"I'm grateful," the 40-year-old Gordon said of his son's early selection on Thursday. "I'm really excited about it. It's a blessing."

Strange-Gordon, also a right-hander, will be hard-pressed to match his father's long and successful career. Gordon has pitched in 879 games, recording 137 wins and 157 saves.

"I would love to play against him [in the Majors]," Gordon said. "But if it is going to take him four or five years, I don't know if I'll be around."
