"I just kind of sat in this chair for about two hours today, not knowing what to do with myself," Harman said. "It's definitely overwhelming. I walked up to the stadium to have a look at the field. It's an exciting time."
Harman was surprised by the call, since he was hitting only .222 (12-of-54) with three doubles, one home run and three RBIs in 16 games at Double-A.
"Yeah, I wasn't expecting it," Harman said. "It was just a regular day at the end of the game and then later that night after the day game, the manager came and let me know. So, yeah, I wasn't expecting it."
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he won't hesitate to add Harman to the lineup.
"I'll play him," Manuel said. "I wouldn't mind putting him in. I saw him in Spring Training. He looks like he's got a chance to be a pretty good player."
Harman hit .281 with 13 homers and 62 RBIs in 122 games at Class A Clearwater last season, and though he was hitting just .222 prior to his recall, he was 6-for-19 over his last five games.
"I've been doing all right," Harman said. "I feel comfortable. I'm not off to the strongest start, but over the past week, everything was feeling a lot better. I'm a lot more comfortable at the plate. It's just understanding that the first two weeks of the season don't make a season. I feel good. I feel comfortable. Anytime you feel comfortable is a good thing, I guess."
Harman was on the phone for hours after the good news broke about his recall to the Phillies. So he made sure to contact his family in Australia immediately.
"It was a late night [Saturday] night," Harman said. "I was on the phone the rest of the night, basically. I found out at 9 at night. I had quite a few phone calls right away. It was good. I called mom and dad right away. It was the middle of the day back home."
For Harman, it has been one of the best experiences of his life.
"It's been fantastic," he said. "I got the call on my birthday, so it was a nice little birthday present to be put on the 40 [man roster]. It's been a fun ride the past five months for me. It's been indescribable in a sense. It's been one good thing after another."
