Rollins not in Phillies' starting lineup

NEW YORK -- For the second straight day, Jimmy Rollins tested his sprained left ankle when the Phillies stretched prior to their game against the Mets.

When the ankle didn't show much improvement, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player sat in favor of Eric Bruntlett for the second straight game. Rollins pinch-hit in the ninth and struck out against Mets closer Billy Wagner.

"It's tender," Rollins said. "Hopefully, [Friday] night. We'll see."

Lateral movement remains the issue for the switch-hitter. He gingerly ran the bases and swung lightly during batting practice.

As he said Wednesday, Rollins said he could be available to pinch-hit, though manager Charlie Manuel would like to stay away from that.

"I could hit, though I [would] limp to first," he said. "Crunch time, adrenaline, I'll be ready."

Rollins was first injured in the eighth inning while lunging back to second base on a pickoff play on Tuesday. He had started 230 straight games before Wednesday, or every game since the second game of a doubleheader on July 30, 2006.
