SAN FRANCISCO -- The Phillies named third baseman Carlos Rivero and right-hander Michael Schwimer their Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month.
Rivero, who was claimed off waivers in November, hit .373 with Double-A Reading. He has since been promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Schwimer went 3-1 with a 1.15 ERA in 11 appearances with the IronPigs in July. He allowed just two earned runs in 15 2/3 innings and struck out 21, converting all four of his save opportunities.
"I like Rivero," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He's got good hands. He's got a good arm. He hasn't learned how to drive the ball yet, but he's still learning. He's advancing. I'm curious to see how he handles Triple-A."
Amaro said Schwimer is having a good year, but wants to see more from him.
"We have to assess how they're getting people out," Amaro said.
