Alfonseca fares well in winter ball

Alfonseca gears up for spring in winter ball

|
Antonio Alfonseca, a veteran of 10 Major League seasons, signed a one-year contract with the Phillies on Jan. 23. Prior to inking the deal, the 34-year-old right-hander pitched for the Azucareros del Este in the Dominican Winter League.

Alfonseca enjoyed a solid DWL regular season, going 1-0 with two saves and a 1.93 ERA in 9 1/3 innings. He also made seven relief appearances in the playoffs, allowing three runs over 7 1/3 frames.

Alfonseca was one of many players in the Phillies' organization who played winter ball. Here's how the others fared:

Arizona Fall League

RHP Joseph Bisenius -- Bisenius finished the AFL season with an unsightly 11.57 ERA for the Peoria Saguaros. However, he did not allow a run over his final three appearances, striking out six batters in 4 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old also appeared in 12 games for the Navegantes del Magallanes of the Venezuelan Winter League, where he went 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA.

LHP J.A. Happ -- A 24-year-old Illinois native, Happ was 1-0 with a 5.02 ERA in five appearances spanning 14 1/3 innings. Most of that action came at the Peoria Sports Complex, the Saguaros' home park.
