Chris Roberson certainly has his work cut out for him in Spring Training this year, since he will be competing with Karim Garcia, Greg Dobbs, Chris Coste and Michael Bourn for one of two available bench spots with the Phillies. But before the 27-year-old outfielder can concentrate on that task, he needs to wrap up his impressive postseason performance with the Mexican Pacific League's Naranjeros de Hermosillo.
Hermosillo is playing the Venados de Mazatlan in the third and final round of the playoffs, and Roberson has contributed every step of the way. The Oakland, Calif., native leads all postseason participants in runs scored (16), ranks second with 20 hits and is tied for sixth with a .333 batting average.
Roberson is one of seven players in the Phillies organization participating in the winter ball playoffs. Here's an update on the others:
Dominican Winter League
C Carlos Ruiz -- Ruiz hit .309 with a team-leading 13 RBIs in the semifinal round of the DWL playoffs. His Tigres del Licey are facing the Aguilas Cibaenas in the finals, where he has struggled. The 28-year-old backstop has appeared in all five games of the series but is hitting .176 (3-for-17). Cibaenas has a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven set.
Venezuelan Winter League
C Orlando Guevara -- Guevara, a 23-year-old backstop, appeared in one playoff game for the Aguilas del Zulia and went hitless in three at-bats. Zulia went 8-8 in the semifinal tournament and did not reach the finals.
2B Carlos Leon -- Leon, also a member of the Aguilas del Zulia, was used sparingly in the postseason. The 27-year-old infielder appeared in seven of the club's 16 playoff games, and he hit .294 (5-for-17) with a double and two runs scored.
RHP Tim McClaskey -- The Navegantes del Magallanes went 12-4 in the semifinals, and they are facing the Tigres de Aragua in the finals. The 31-year-old McClaskey has started five playoff games and is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA over 23 1/3 innings.
LHP Moises Melendez -- Melendez made four relief appearances for the Aguilas del Zulia in the playoffs, and he allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings.
IF Peeter Ramos -- Ramos appeared in just four of the Leones del Caracas' 16 playoff games and went 1-for-11. Caracas was 3-13 in the round-robin semifinals and was eliminated.
