Castro shines in Dominican Republic

Fabio Castro was a pleasant surprise for the Phillies during the 2006 season, as the 21-year-old Rule 5 Draft acquisition compiled a 2.27 ERA over 31 2/3 innings while holding opponents to a .170 average against him.

Castro is currently pitching in a round-robin postseason tournament for the Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Winter League, and he is picking up right where he left off. The left-hander has hurled 14 innings over three playoff appearances, during which he has picked up a win while allowing just two runs.

Castro is one of a dozen players in the Phillies organization playing winter ball. Here's an update on the Phils prospects currently playing in the postseason in the Dominican, Mexican Pacific and Venezuelan Winter Leagues.

Dominican Winter League

LHP Eude Brito -- After dominating in the regular season, Brito has yet to appear in a postseason contest for the Azucareros del Este.

C Carlos Ruiz -- Ruiz has been a standout performer for the Tigres del Licey, who are 7-6 over the first 13 games of an 18-game, four-team round-robin playoff tournament. The 27-year-old backstop has appeared in 11 games and is batting .314 (11-for-35).

RHP Alfredo Simon -- Simon, a Rule 5 Draft acquisition, is 1-1 over two postseason contests. The 25-year-old right-hander has allowed eight runs over eight innings, while striking out nine batters.

Mexican Pacific League

OF Chris Roberson -- Roberson's Naranjeros de Hermosillo recently defeated the Caneros de los Mochis in a best-of-seven semifinal series, 4-1. The 27-year-old hit .333 (7-for-21) in the series, with a double and five runs scored.

Venezuelan Winter League

RHP Joseph Bisenius -- Bisenius went 0-1 with three saves and a 5.06 ERA over 10 2/3 innings for the Navegantes del Magallanes in the regular season. He has yet to appear in the playoffs.

RHP Ryan Cameron -- Cameron made 11 regular-season relief appearances for the Navegantes, and he went 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA over 18 2/3 innings. He has not appeared in the postseason.

C Orlando Guevara -- Guevara appeared in just four games for the Aguilas del Zulia during the regular season, and he hit .154 (2-for-13). He has yet to appear in the postseason.

2B Carlos Leon -- Leon, a member of the Aguilas, has been used sparingly in the postseason. The 27-year-old infielder has doubled and driven in a run over four at-bats spanning three games.

RHP Tim McClaskey -- The Navegantes are undefeated in seven postseason games, and McClaskey has certainly done his part. The 31-year-old has started two games and is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA over nine innings.

LHP Moises Melendez -- Melendez finished up the regular season for the Aguilas by allowing just one earned run over his final 10 1/3 innings. The 20-year-old has not fared nearly as well in the postseason, having given up three runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings spanning three appearances.

RHP Mauricio Romero -- Romero made his VWL debut for the Aguilas on Dec. 27, pitching a scoreless inning. The 20-year-old has not appeared in the postseason.
