Phils prospects wrap AFL season

Phillies prospects close out 2006 AFL season

On Nov. 16, the Peoria Saguaros closed out the 2006 Arizona Fall League season with a 5-0 win over the Mesa Solar Sox. The victory gave the Saguaros, whose roster included seven Philadelphia Phillies prospects, a record of 15-17 for the season. The club finished in second place in the AFL's West Division, one game behind the Grand Canyon Rafters.

Here are the final stats of the Phillies' AFL competitors, as well as updates on Philadelphia farmhands currently honing their skills in the Mexican Pacific, Dominican Winter and Venezuelan Winter Leagues.

Peoria Saguaros

RHP Joseph Bisenius -- Bisenius finished the AFL season with an unsightly 11.57 ERA. However, he did not allow a run in his final three appearances, during which he struck out six batters in 4 2/3 innings.

RHP Gavin Floyd -- Floyd, who went 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA over six starts for the Saguaros, will almost certainly open next season as a member of Triple-A Ottawa. AFL opponents hit just .233 against him, although he issued 10 walks over 19 1/3 innings.

LHP Gio Gonzalez -- Gonzalez started the Saguaros' season finale and tossed 3 2/3 scoreless frames. The 21-year-old Floridian finished with a stellar 2.81 ERA, striking out 20 batters in 16 innings.

LHP J.A. Happ -- A 24-year-old native of Illinois, Happ finished with a 1-0 record and 5.02 ERA over five appearances spanning 14 1/3 innings. He pitched 13 of those innings at Peoria Sports Complex, the Saguaros' home ballpark.

Dominican Winter League

RHP Maximino De La Cruz -- Pitching for the Leones del Escogido, De La Cruz has not given up a run over two appearances spanning just 1 2/3 innings.
