Kendrick gaining experience in Arizona

Kyle Kendrick had a breakout season in 2006. After going 10-28 with a 5.07 ERA over his first three Minor League seasons, the 22-year-old right-hander went a combined 12-9 with a 3.17 ERA in 28 appearances (27 starts) split between Class A Lakewood and Class A Advanced Clearwater. He struck out 133 batters over a career-high 176 innings, and opposing hitters managed to hit just .230 against him.

The Phillies farmhand is continuing his 2006 campaign with the Peoria Saguaros of the prospect-laden Arizona Fall League. A horrible one-inning stint against the Mesa Solar Sox on Oct. 30 did significant damage to Kendrick's ERA, but the former football standout righted himself in his lone appearance this past week. Facing Grand Canyon on Monday, Kendrick tossed two scoreless innings as the Saguaros held on for a 6-5 win.

Regardless of how the 6-foot-3 Texan does over the final week of the AFL's 32-game season, his presence on the Saguaros serves as ample proof that the Phillies organization considers him a promising pitching prospect.

Here's how the Phillies' other five AFL competitors performed this week, along with updates on Philadelphia farmhands currently honing their skills in the Mexican Pacific and Venezuelan Winter Leagues.

Peoria Saguaros

RHP Gavin Floyd -- Floyd allowed a lot of baserunners in his lone start on Saturday, but escaped relatively unscathed. Facing Grand Canyon, the 23-year-old right-hander surrendered two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings. He is 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA over 15 1/3 frames this season.

RHP Joseph Bisenius -- After a 3 1/2-week layoff following a horrible outing on Oct. 12, Bisenius finally made his second AFL appearance on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Iowan walked the bases loaded in his one inning of work, but escaped the jam.

LHP Gio Gonzalez -- Gonzalez started against Phoenix on Nov. 2 and scattered three hits and a walk over three scoreless innings. The highly regarded 21-year-old has allowed three runs over 8 1/3 innings this season.

LHP J.A. Happ -- The 24-year-old lefty started against the Javelinas on Nov. 3 and did not factor into the decision, allowing two runs on five hits over four innings. Happ is 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA over 10 1/3 innings this season.

C Jason Jaramillo -- Jaramillo made just one start this week, though he certainly made the most of it. The switch-hitting backstop went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored against Grand Canyon on Monday and is now hitting a lusty .340 (17-for-50).

LHP Chris Key -- Key struggled in his lone appearance, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk in just one inning. The 29-year-old Nevada native, a late addition to the Saguaros roster, has pitched just 5 2/3 frames in the AFL this season.

Mexican Pacific League

OF Chris Roberson -- After mustering just nine hits in his first 71 at-bats, Roberson's bat came alive this week. The 27-year-old reeled off four straight multihit games and drove in six runs, raising his average 80 points to .235.

Venezuelan Winter League

RHP Jeremy Cummings -- Cummings started for Aguilas del Zulia on Nov. 3 and did not factor into the decision, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings. The 29-year-old has not earned a victory over three starts this season, despite a stellar 2.12 ERA.

OF Josh Kroeger -- Kroeger had his best game of the season on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with a homer, double, three runs scored and two RBIs. The Iowa native followed that up on Tuesday by going 2-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, raising his average to .313 (20-for-64) on the season.

2B Carlos Leon -- Leon collected four hits in 12 at-bats this past week to lift his average to .257 (9-for-35). The 27-year-old switch-hitter split the 2006 season between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

LHP Brian Mazone -- Mazone was roughed up in his lone start for the Navegantes del Magallanes, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks over just two innings. The 30-year-old southpaw is 1-1 with a 6.46 ERA over 15 1/3 innings.

RHP Tim McClaskey -- McClaskey turned in a pair of strong starts this week, although he earned a win in just one of them. Over 10 1/3 innings, the 30-year-old righty surrendered three runs -- two earned -- while striking out two and walking one.

LHP Moises Melendez -- On Nov. 3, Melendez picked up his second win in as many appearances, despite allowing a run over two innings. It was the first earned run the overachieving 20-year-old has surrendered in 14 2/3 innings for Aguilas del Zulia.

SS Jesus Merchan -- Merchan appeared in five games this past week and collected four hits in 11 at-bats to raise his average to .281 (9-for-32). The 25-year-old drove in a pair of runs on Tuesday.

2B Danny Sandoval -- It was more of the same for Sandoval, who went 5-for-22 for the Pastora de los Llanos this past week to lower his average four points to .238. On Nov. 1, the 27-year-old blasted his second homer of the season.

LHP Matt White -- White hurled six scoreless innings on Friday to pick up his second win in as many starts for the Navegantes del Magallanes. The 28-year-old has a sparkling 1.56 ERA over 17 1/3 innings this season.
