Here's how the Phillies' six other AFL competitors did this week, as well as updates on Philadelphia farmhands currently honing their skills in the Mexican Pacific and Venezuelan Winter Leagues.
Peoria Saguaros (1-4 this week, 8-11 overall)
RHP Joseph Bisenius: While he remains on the Saguaros' roster, Bisenius has not appeared in a game since struggling mightily Oct. 12.
RHP Gavin Floyd: Gallopin' Gavin is on a roll. The 23-year-old right-hander started Saturday against Scottsdale and allowed just one hit over four scoreless innings. Floyd's ERA is 6.35, but take away a disastrous outing on Oct. 16 and it drops to a microscopic 0.93.
LHP Gio Gonzalez: While Gonzalez did not appear in any games for the Saguaros this week, he did have the honor of starting for the West Division in the AFL's inaugural Rising Stars Showcase. The 21-year-old allowed an unearned run over two innings in the exhibition contest, in which the rosters consisted primarily of first-round draft picks and Minor League All-Stars. The East Division went on to win the game, 3-1.
LHP J.A. Happ: Happ also appeared in the Rising Stars Showcase, striking out the side in his one inning of work. The 24-year-old's last appearance for the Saguaros came on Oct. 23.
C Jason Jaramillo: The switch-hitting backstop went 0-for-1 with a walk in the Rising Stars Showcase, but also logged time for the Saguaros as well. He collected five hits in 15 at-bats to raise his average to .311. The highlight of Jaramillo's week came on Oct. 26, when he doubled twice, scored twice and drove in two runs against Phoenix.
RHP Kyle Kendrick: Kendrick struggled mightily in his lone appearance this week, allowing five runs on seven hits over just one inning of work against Mesa on Monday. The outing raised the 22-year-old's ERA to 11.37 over 6 1/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .452 against him.
Mexican Pacific League
OF Chris Roberson: Roberson, who played in 57 games for the Phillies in 2006, is struggling as the starting center fielder for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. The 27-year-old is hitting just .155 (11-for-71) with one home run and six RBIs.
Venezuelan Winter League
RHP Jeremy Cummings: Cummings, who turns 30 on Tuesday, has started twice for the Aguilas del Zulia. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 1.64 ERA over 11 innings.
LHP Sergio Escalona: The 22-year-old Escalona has struggled in each of his two appearances for the Cardenales de Lara. The righty has allowed four runs on seven hits over just three innings.
C Orlando Guevara: Guevara, who played at four different levels during the 2006 season, has collected one hit over five at-bats for the Aguilas del Zulia.
OF Josh Kroeger: Kroeger, meanwhile, is receiving plenty of playing time with Aguilas del Zulia. The Iowa native is hitting .300 (15-for-50) with a homer and five RBIs.
2B Carlos Leon: A switch-hitting second baseman who turned 27 this past August, Leon is hitting .217 (5-for-23) over seven games with Aguilas del Zulia.
LHP Brian Mazone: The 30-year-old lefty is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA over three starts with the Navegantes del Magallanes. The California native received a callup to the Phillies this past season, but was sent back down without making an appearance.
RHP Tim McClaskey: McClaskey allowed one run over five innings in his debut with the Navegantes del Magallanes on Oct. 17. He struggled in his next appearance, however, yielding six runs on six hits over 2 1/3 frames.
LHP Moises Melendez: Melendez has been one of the Venezuelan Winter League's biggest surprises. The 20-year-old lefty, who spent the 2006 season with the Rookie-level Venezuelan Phillies, has hurled 12 2/3 scoreless innings for Aguilas del Zulia.
SS Jesus Merchan: The 25-year-old shortstop has accumulated just 21 at-bats over 12 games with the Navegantes del Magallanes. He is hitting .238 on the season.
IF Peeter Ramos: Playing time has been scarce for Ramos, who has appeared in three games and has just one hit in four at-bats.
2B Danny Sandoval: Sandoval, who appeared in 28 games for the Phillies in 2006, is hitting .237 (14-for-59) with a home run and four RBIs for the Pastora de los Llanos.
LHP Matt White: A 29-year-old native of Massachusetts currently playing for Navegantes del Magallanes, White tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings in his last start and earned the win.
