Moyer to have elbow surgery, eyes 2012 return

PHILADELPHIA -- Jamie Moyer wants one more shot.

The veteran left-hander announced on The Moyer Foundation's Facebook page that he plans to have surgery on his left elbow, which he injured in July with the Phillies and injured again this month pitching in winter ball. He will undergo Tommy John surgery Wednesday, which would give him the opportunity to try pitching again in 2012.

"We are cautiously optimistic superman will make a comeback!" he and his wife wrote on the page.

Moyer turned 48 on Nov. 18, so he would be 49 heading into Spring Training in 2012.

If Moyer returns in 2012 at 49 years old, he'd join Hoyt Wilhelm (1972) and Jack Quinn (1933) as the second-oldest pitchers to appear in the regular season. Satchel Paige is the oldest after making one appearance at 59 years old in 1965.

Moyer, who is a free agent, went 9-9 with a 4.84 ERA in 19 starts this season before he hurt his elbow during a July 20 start in St. Louis. Moyer rehabbed the elbow with an eye on competing for a job somewhere this upcoming spring. But his plans derailed when he injured his elbow again during his first winter-ball start.
