Phils' Green witnessed both playoff no-no's

|
PHILADELPHIA -- Dallas Green has seen them both.

He personally witnessed Don Larsen's perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series at Yankee Stadium and Roy Halladay's no-hitter Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Citizens Bank Park.

Green, who the Phillies signed as an amateur free agent pitcher in 1955, drove to New York with a friend and got tickets in the right-field bleachers in '56. Green had just returned home following a season in the Minors in Salt Lake City.

"I still have eight-millimeter film of that," Green said of Larsen's perfect game. "I've got them somewhere, but I don't know where the hell they are."

Green, who has been a senior advisor to the Phillies' general manager since 1998, remembers the excitement in Yankee Stadium, but he beamed as he recalled Halladay's masterpiece.

"I love to watch that guy pitch," he said. "I could watch him any day."

Halladay joined the Phillies in December in a trade with the Blue Jays. The Phils received indications they would be unable to sign ace Cliff Lee to a multiyear extension, so they pursued Halladay, whom they have coveted for a year.

The Phillies agreed to send three prospects to the Blue Jays, but with one caveat: they needed to sign Halladay to an extension before finalizing the trade. Once both parties agreed to a three-year, $60 million extension, Halladay joined Philadelphia, which traded Lee to Seattle.

Green is part of the brain trust that helps make such moves. So he had better seats Wednesday than he had at Yankee Stadium. He sat in the GM box with Phils general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and other front office officials.

"We went nuts at the end," Green said. "We forgot about Cliff Lee."
