He went to a pharmacy Tuesday night, bought some red hair dye and dyed his goatee red.
"Red for the playoffs," Valdez said.
He said the transformation took roughly 40 minutes.
"Hey, whatever it takes to win," Valdez said. "It doesn't matter, as long as we win."
Valdez, who started Game 1 in place of injured third baseman Placido Polanco, said he couldn't convince any of his teammates to go along with him.
Pandemonium might have ensued had right fielder Jayson Werth joined Valdez.
