Center fielder Jiwan James went 3-for-4 for Lakewood with two runs scored and two RBIs. First baseman Jonathan Singleton drove in a first-inning run on an infield ground out and James' two-out double in the fifth put Lakewood up, 2-0. Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a two-out homer in the bottom of the fifth for Greenville's lone run.
Lakewood put the game away with four runs in the ninth, all runs coming on four consecutive two-out singles.
Right-hander Julio Rodriguez was the winner, allowing one run on three hits in five innings. He walked four and struck out seven. Joshua Zeid took over in the sixth for Lakewood and hurled three hitless innings while striking out four. Mike McGuire pitched the ninth.
The game featured a bench-clearing fracas that saw four players ejected after the last out of the fifth inning. Greenville shortstop Derrik Gibson was thrown out at home plate Leandro Castro trying to score on a single to left field. Gibson ran into catcher Sebastian Valle attempting to knock the ball loose and set off a fracas in which Rodriguez, Castro, Gibson and Greenville third baseman Michael Almanzar were ejected.
Wednesday is a travel day. The final three games will be played in Lakewood's FirstEnergy Park starting on Thursday night (7:05 p.m. ET). Brody Colvin (6-8, 3.39 ERA) will start for Lakewood. In his final 17 starts, Colvin was 4-2 with a 2.00 ERA.
