LOS ANGELES -- Chase Utley and Ryan Howard typically are stacked in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the Phillies' lineup, but manager Charlie Manuel split up the pair for Monday's series opener against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
Manuel hit Utley second and Howard fourth. Placido Polanco hit third.
Utley had hit .200 (9-for-45) with two doubles, four RBIs, nine walks and eight strikeouts in 12 games since being activated from the 15-day disabled list Aug. 17. Howard had hit .121 (4-for-33) with one RBI, one walk and 16 strikeouts in eight games since being activated Aug. 21.
"We definitely need Chase and Ryan to get hot," Manuel said. "We've got guys like [Jimmy] Rollins. When we get our offense going, we've got guy like Rollins, Howard and Utley hitting. Polly has been pretty consistent all year. He's been over .300 all season, really. [Shane] Victorino and [Raul] Ibanez, we need to get those people hitting in general."
