PITTSBURGH -- It could have been worse, but Phillies catcher Brian Schneider still had his left thumb in a splint Friday at PNC Park.
He has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb. It is the same injury as Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, but not nearly as severe. Schneider said he will not be placed on the 15-day disabled list, which must be a relief to the Phillies.
But Schneider, who injured the thumb Thursday against the Pirates, said he probably will not play the next couple days. He said he is available in an emergency situation.
"Just be available if needed," he said. "Then just hope it gets better in the next couple days and go from there."
Schneider's absence leaves Dane Sardinha as the roster's only healthy catcher. Catcher Carlos Ruiz is on the DL with a concussion.
