Phillies prospects headline US roster

|
PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies prospects Domonic Brown and Jarred Cosart will represent the U.S. in the XM All-Star Futures Game on July 11 in Anaheim.

Outfielder Brown is the organization's top prospect, hitting .317 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs with Double-A Reading. He also has 15 doubles, three triples, 12 stolen bases, a .389 on-base percentage and a .585 slugging percentage. The Phillies don't believe he is ready for the big leagues, although it wouldn't be a stretch to anticipate him as a September callup.

Brown has Phillies fans excited for the future. He figures to be in the conversation for a roster spot in 2011, depending on what happens in the offseason with free-agent-to-be Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez, who turned 38 earlier this month.

The Phillies also think highly enough of Brown that they traded every other one of their top prospects over the past 12 months in trades that brought them the since-departed Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay: Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor, Travis d'Arnaud, Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson, Jason Donald and Jason Knapp.

Cosart is 7-2 with a 3.44 ERA in 13 starts this season with Class A Lakewood. He has struck out 77 and walked just 15 in 70 2/3 innings, and he is considered one of the organization's top pitching prospects. He has an electric arm, but he is only 20 and needs more seasoning before he is ready for the big leagues.

The 12th annual Futures Game can be seen live on MLB.TV, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on MLB.com's Gameday. In addition, XM Radio will broadcast play-by-play coverage of the event live on XM 175. MLB.com will also provide complete coverage before, during and after the game.

Four former Futures Game players are on the Phillies' roster: J.C. Romero (1999), Chase Utley (2001), Ryan Howard (2003) and Joe Blanton (2004).
