Phillies slot in Gload as DH vs. Lackey

BOSTON -- Ross Gload got the call as the Phillies' designated hitter Friday at Fenway Park.

Why Gload?

Gload, who hits left-handed, has hit .286 (4-for-14) with two doubles and two RBIs in his career against Red Sox right-hander John Lackey. Manager Charlie Manuel liked Gload because he has had some success against Lackey, and also because he provided some balance to the lineup.

"Plus he needs some at-bats," Manuel said.

The Phillies will use the designated hitter in nine of their next 15 games. It will be a good time to get his bench players at-bats.
