Burrell earns NL Player of Week honors

MIAMI -- Pat Burrell's outstanding performance during the first week earned him the season's first Bank of America National League Player of the Week honors.

Burrell has been phenomenonal out of the chute, driving in a league-best 15 runs, with three home runs. The slugger hit his fourth homer, a two-run blast, in the first inning Monday off the Marlins' Al Leiter in Miami.

Burrell also paced the league with 12 hits, 24 total bases, a .960 slugging percentage and a .483 on-base percentage. He set a career best by recording an RBI in six straight games and collecting at least one hit in all six games.

"Twenty-five more weeks like that, and we'll be in really good shape," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.

Detroit's Dmitri Young, who began the season with a three-homer performance on Opening Day, took home the American League honors.

Other nominees this past week included pitchers Jon Lieber, Josh Beckett, Dontrelle Willis and Jason Schmidt, and hitters Edgardo Alfonzo, Joe Randa, Jeff Kent and Troy Glaus.

Burrell's fast start has helped Philadelphia overcome a 1-3 start and take two out of three games from St. Louis. The Phillies scored 23 runs in the previous two games, and Burrell has been a large part of that.

"I'm in a good groove right now," said Burrell. "The key is to stay consistent."
